Mica Heliskiing
“Late last month, in the midst of the biggest storm of the year, I landed at Mica Heliskiing for three days of heli-assisted ski touring. The idea is to use a helicopter to take the touring part of the first run of the day. After one free run you skin a couple runs, catch another flight into a new drainage and ski another run. After another skin or two the heli picks you up and takes you back to a comfy lodge, with running hot water and delicious meals. Sounds sweet and it was.” (One of Ryan Stuart's photo albums)
It had snowed for five days before I arrived and it snowed non-stop for the first two days I was at Mica. This was early the second morning. Check out the big, fat, reverse camber skis everyone was skiing on. Instead of arcing down from the centre of the ski, reverse camber skis arc upwards, like a water ski. The idea is that they provide more floatation and control in deep powder. Everyone I talked to loved them. It probably didn't hurt that each ski was as wide as a snowboard.
