Finding Farley

Leanne Allison, Karsten Heuer and their son Zev.

Back in the spring of 2007, one of Canada's most impressive adventure-couples set off on yet another remarkable journey.

Karsten Heuer and Leanne Allison decided to travel from their home in Alberta to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, to visit the legendary Canadian writer Farley Mowat. They planned to cover more than half of the distance by canoe and by sail, even though they'd be travelling with their two-year-old son, Zev, and the family dog, Willow.

Their route eastward took them to many of the places that Mowat had featured in books such as Never Cry Wolf and A Whale for the Killing. Along the way, they corresponded with Mowat by mail. And ultimately, they met up with him at his home in Cape Breton.

Now, two years later, Allison and Heuer have produced a terrific film about their adventure—Finding Farley. It's both a wonderful tribute to Mowat and a fascinating look at what it's like to undertake this kind of ambitious trip. With a two-year-old. In the wilderness with a billion insects.

The movie is having its premiere on Tuesday, October 13, at the Vancouver International Film Festival. It will also be the opening night film at Planet in Focus in Toronto on Wednesday, October 21,and Farley Mowat will be in attendance along with the filmmakers.
