Spring rules

Today is April 6. It should be spring but the ski conditions are anything but. Last night it snowed about 15 centimetres on the local mountains. The snow is typically spring like – a little heavy – but who’s complaining. The skiing is awesome. We’ve barely had any melt so far, which is good news. While everyone else is complaining about it being cold, I’m rubbing my hands in anticipation of a long spring ski season and a long paddling season after that.

Lots of people put the skis away come spring when they should be waxing up. The melt-freeze conditions of spring are the best for long spring tours and bagging peaks in a day. The conditions are fast and the avalanche danger is predictable – it’s tied to the melting of the snow. So right after I finish writing this I’m going to thumb through the local ski guide and plot a few missions. I might even plan what gear I’m going to test while I’m doing it.
