Favourite brand?
A week or two ago I was asked if I have any favourite brands and specifically if I liked Patagonia. I have tested and tried products from almost every major brand and I can’t say one stands out. Many manufacturers make quality products. Some fit me better than others and some brands definitely put a little more effort into refining their products than others. But then those ultra refined products usually come with an ultra high price tag, too.
Like anything, if you have a good experience with a product you're likely to be loyal to that brand. But I live in a small city (30,000) and you can't always get what you want. So, I've become much less brand loyal. What is important is to find products that fit you and your needs at a price that makes sense. Fit is key - don't compromise. And I'm definitely a believer in paying more for quality; it will pay you back in longevity.
I think I've done a great job of avoiding the question so far, so here goes. I do have a few fav brands. I love my G3 tele bindings, my Scarpa boots (hiking and tele), Saucony running shoes, Chlorophylle soft shell, Leki ski poles, Integral Designs bivy sack, Big Agnes tent, MSR stove, Mountain Equipment Co-Op packs and my Sierra Designs insulated jacket. As for Patagonia - what’s not to like? Their products are always top notch, last forever and fit me well. The company tries hard to give back to the environment and they are innovators in recycled fabrics and recycling products.
Hope that answers the question.
Till next time...
Ryan
