12-hours of pain

I don't know what I'm thinking. I've barely been on my mountain bike this spring and yet I've signed myself up for a 12-hour mountain bike race. The Twelve Hours of Cumberland (coincidentally, I'm sure, the acronym is THC) is an annual race held on the solstice weekend in the mountain biking playground of Cumberland, an old mining town in the Comox Valley. From 8 am until 8 pm, teams of four, two and solo riders race around a 40 minute loop as many times as they can. Local riding club, the United Riders of Cumberland puts on the event.

A couple friends and I decided to join early this spring, thinking we'd get out riding a bunch, but that wasn't to be. Being suckers for punishment and always on the look out for a reason to ride, we're still going to giver. I've fixed up my bike with a new drive train and handlebars. Hopefully that will pull me through the 11 hours of riding I'm not in shape for. I'll let you know how it goes.
