Ryan Stuart, explore's gear editor

Ryan Stuart's tell all blog spot on his gear addiction and life and times as explore magazine's gear editor

Wine and dine in Whistler

Tomorrow I’m off to Whistler to stay at the brand new Four Season’s Hotel and ski at the hill and in the nearby backcountry testing gear. It’s a hard job, but someone has to do it.

One of the major outdoor PR firms Carmichael Lynch Spong is hosting a group of gear testers from all over the outdoor industry to test winter products for Winter 08-09 from some of their clients including, Giro, CamelBak, SmartWool, Arc’Teryx and Atomic.

One of the perks of my job is that gear manufacturers will sometimes invite me to go to events where they promote their products. Bad timing means this is the first one I've made it to in almost a year and a half on the job. But this one sounds like a good camp to start with.

When we’re not on the slopes “testing gear” we’ll be checking out Whistler “testing gear.” There’s even talk of having to go cat skiing. It’s going to suck.

Hopefully I’ll have time to blog to let you know just how much it is sucking and over the next few weeks I’ll let you know about some of the gear I checked out.

Wow, you said it. Sucks to be you. But I'm always interested to hear about the gear testing from out in the field. You'll have to tell us how you got your job. Does it really pay the bills? Perhaps a future blog entry.

Have a great time!
