Outdoor News: Good Reading This Weekend
This edition: Explorers Club, Machu Pichu and a 120-mile canoe marathon.
What’s the Explorers Club? Ask Tenzing Norgay, Sally Ride, Thor Heyerdahl and Charles Lindbergh.
The trek to Machu Pichu takes up and down in the Andes, over 4,200 metre passes, over the course of four days. You’ll be glad to have a coca-leaf chewing porter from the indigenous Quechua people schlepping your bags and setting up your tent. Even with someone else doing most of the sweating, better do a bit of cardio training before you go. Book three months in advance, minimum.
The AuSable River Canoe Marathon goes off this weekend. It’s the 61st year for it: 120 miles nonstop, just canoes, from Grayling, Michigan (in the middle of the upper peninsula), to Oscoda, Michigan (on the shore of Lake Huron). There’s $50,000 up for grabs.
