Family Pre-trip a Success - Now Bring on the Real Adventure
Alana and Kyla okay the Kawartha pretrip and are now looking forward to next big adventure - 12 days in Chinguichi
My wife Alana and I just got back from a three night trip with our three-year old Kyla (and 12 year-old dog Bailey) from the Kawartha Highlands. It was a short trip before our big 12-day trip we are taking in the Chiniguichi area. It's was a good idea to do a pre-trip, to see what gear we missed and what gear we actually don't need, and to get Kyla (and Bailey) mentally ready for a longer stay out in the woods away from Dora and air-conditioning. It was also a good idea (actually, it was a great idea) on top of getting all the bugs out, to remind my wife and I how much we like interior camping as a family, and how much our dog and daughter love it as well.
Only mishaps along the way: an attack from red ants to my daughters arm (nightmare at the time because we didn't know what was biting her) and the realization that our 12-year old dog was deaf (two nice guys driving an ATV came to visit our camp and chat and Bailey didn't know they were there until she turned around).
Our route was perfect. We paddled south on Gold and Cold Lakes and then paddled up the creek into Cloudy Lake. This lake is usually difficult to get to due to low water in the creek. But unusually high water this year meant five easy lift-overs on beaver dams and we had the lake to ourselves.
