Paddler's Guide to Happy Camping
This is Kevin Callan's blog about his trips, his (mis-)adventures, and his favourite gear.
Wilderness a Great Teaching Tool
I just got back from Camp Kinark in Minden, Ontario. I took my General Arts and Science students from Sir Sandford Fleming College (where I teach part-time) on a Field Camp. They had a blast. And so did I. The trip reminded me of how wilderness is such a great teaching tool. The students wandered the woods using map, compass and GPS (no trails were used) and the group dynamics showed ten minutes into the trip. We also spent time on a major high-ropes course, something they're still talking about.
If you're a teacher and you have time and energy to take students into the wild, I gurantee you'll get results that are unmeasurable. Wilderness is definitely a perfect teaching tool.
