In summer of 2001 I and my friends Ann and Tim finally got around to do Crowsnest Mountain 2785 m (9138 ft). The mountain is located in Crowsnest Pass area (Southern Alberta). It was a hot day and we probably started a bit too late because it was already very hot when we got to the trailhead. The approach is very steep almost from the very beginning but the views are superb. The mountain stands aloof in front of the main High Rock Range. After initial first hour or so we finally got to the gully and its shade. Well, being in shade was good news but the steepness of the surrounding walls had to be negotiated using fixed chains and that part of the hike / scramble is not recommended for faint hearts. Once above the gully it was straight up the huge scree area. We were again exposed to sun but this time due to altitude I guess it was not as hot plus there was very welcoming light wind. On our way up we saw magnificent mountain goat. Once we reached the summit it was so hard to start heading back, the views were phenomenal plus nice warm day – we stayed up there good one hour or even more basking lazily in the sun.
