Edit textNear the north-west corner of Maui is the surf and snorkeling destination called Honolua Bay. The small turn off is located between mile markers 32 and 33 on Highway 30.
Surfing
When the waves are breaking this is a world-class surf spot. Migrating humpback whales have been spotted no further then 100 feet from the line-up and many agree that it is one of the most scenic spots to surf in the world.
Park on the bluff overlooking the water and walk down (can be the scariest part on a rainy, slippery day). Beginners are not recommended as this is no beach break.
Waves are consistent and powerful and in fact a surfing apparel company is named after this break: The Honolua Surf co.
Snorkeling
When you arrive at Honolua Bay for snorkeling you will notice that there is no real beach here but instead a small shore full of rocks. This is where you can put on your snorkel gear and head out into the water. Snorkeling is best along the cliff walls.
