A knot (abbreviation: kt or kn) is a measure of speed.

All of the following are equal:
1 knot
1 nautical mile per hour
1.151 miles per hour (statute miles per hour)
1.852 km per hour
1.688 feet per second
0.5144 metres per second
52.14 minutes per mile
32.4 minutes per kilometre
Mach 0.001513

Knots are used as a unit of measurement of speed in boating and aviation.

Saying "knots per hour" is redundant, since a knot is already a measure of distance per hour (1 nautical mile per hour).

Knots generally refer to the speed of the boat relative to land, not relative to the water, which could be moving.
