PFD is short for "personal floatation device," and it's the cool way of saying "life jacket."

A very important but underemphasized point is that a PFD may be perfectly suited to one activity and entirely inappropriate to another. In addition, an improperly sized or fitted PFD may be completely ineffective, resulting in injury or death to the user. Proper sizing and fitting of PDFs is critically important, especially for children and non-swimmers.
