Sea of Dreams is an incredible book about the Around Alone yacht race of 2002. The book is a must-read for any sailors or people even remotely interested in sailing.

The Around Alone yacht race (formerly called the BOC Challenge, and now named the VELUX 5 OCEANS Race) brings together both professional sailors and the most hardcore adventurers. There are 5 legs of the race taking the participants around the globe with 4 mandatory stops.

The book is a gripping story about each of the participants with a focus on the Canadian Derek Hatfield in his boat "Spirit of Canada" in the Open 40 category.

Each section of the book details storms that progressively get worse as the participants head to the Southern Ocean and around Cape Horn. You will be engrossed by the sheer determination (perhaps craziness?) of the participants.

The book culminates with a terrifying description of Hatfield's experience around the Horn.

Enjoy the read.

Derek has built a new Spirit of Canada that is 60 feet long. He will be entering the Vendee Globe 2008 race to do it all again! You can follow his progress on the website mentioned in the "related links" section.
