The Baths, British Virgin Islands

Near the southern tip of Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands is a spectacular location for snorkeling and exploring called The Baths.

Any taxi will take you there and you will be dropped off at the top by the restaurant. It was a 15 minute taxi ride from Little Dix Bay and probably 10 minutes from Spanish Town. There is a $3 per person fee to enter The Baths.

There is a 5-10 minute hike down to the first beach. The hike is moderately difficult with several spots where footing is slippery. If you take your time it shouldn't prohibit anyone from making the trip.

As you arrive at the first beach you are welcomed by giant boulders along a beautiful beach. This is a great place to snorkel or swim but is only the beginning of the beauty of The Baths.

It is strongly recommended that you follow the signs to "The Caves" and the "Hike to Devil's Bay". The sign says this is a 20 minute hike but hikers going a modest pace will make the trip in less then that.

Along the hike you will be passing between and under the massive boulders. There are some places where you have to duck down or squeeze through but there is lots of light and they are very short. Nothing that will you make you feel claustrophobic. There are some gorgeous tide pools that make the hike very scenic.

Once you arrive in Devil's Bay throw on your snorkel equipment and jump in. There is lots of marine life and plenty of spots where you can snorkel in between the huge boulders that go down to a sandy bottom.

Any trip to the BVI's should include a stop at The Baths if at all possible. There are plenty of mooring bouys for sailboats just off-shore.

The general rule is to try and avoid the peak visit time of 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. This is when passing cruise ships sometime drop off hundreds of visitors.

What a cool place! Does anyone know if there are good anchorage locations to arrive by boat?

There are at least 20 mooring bouys located just off-shore for easy access from a sailboat.
