Throw Bag

Also called a rescue bag. A boating safety device, intended to be thrown to a boater or swimmer in distress. The thrower throws the bag, and holds the loose end of the rope. When the person in distress has a hold of the bag, a variety of rescues can be effected, from simply pulling the person to shore, to a more complicated rescue operation.

The throw bag itself is a pouch of variable size (generally about the size of a large shoe), often made of nylon. A rope (ideally one designed not to kink or knot easily) is tied to the inside of the pouch. The rest of the rope is stuffed into the bag, with one left dangling out of the opening.

The throw is often done underhand, but the specifics depend on the rescue situation. Using a throw bag is a skill worth practicing regularly.
