Zip Ties

Edit Icon Edit text   |   Edit all fields

Zip ties are strips of plastic you can buy at a hardware store, which have an eyelet at one end and small ridges running across the plastic along the length of the tie. By feeding the end of the tie into the eyelet, a tooth in the eyelet locks onto the ridges, making it possible to fasten the zip tie at a variety of places (i.e., making a tight loop in a range of different diameters).

As an illustration of their dependability, cops carry zip ties in case they need extra handcuffs.

Zip ties are small and very portable, and can serve in a pinch for a variety of outdoor uses including replacement zipper pulls, or substitutes for small lengths of rope. Zip ties can often be a better option than rope for temporarily cinching two small items together, as long as you don't need to release them in a hurry or with any frequency.

Though they're not intended for re-use, you can open a zip tie by inserting a small knife point in between the tooth and the ridged side of the the tie. With the ridges disengaged, you can pull the tie open.
